But the best thing about this entire show has always been the focus on family. None of us live in a vacuum and, good or bad, our families shape and define who we are. They both understood that the other’s family was part and parcel of who they are, and they each reached out to help the other’s family become healthy (even if that meant one couple splitting up).
Even the ones with Se-ah and Yeo-reum cockblocking the leads. I mean, they are pretty annoying at times. But somehow I get the satisfaction of seeing the leads jealous of seeing one another with their own respective cockblocker hahaha. Nonetheless, the seconds leads were still bearable imo. If we were to compare, there are definitely many more worse second leads out there. Thank you Lollypip and girlfriday for the great and heartfelt recaps.
But the acting was also very poor – both characters were played by idols, with little acting experience, and it showed. Both of them were more concerned with looking good than showing some real emotion, and neither of them were able to give any unspoken clues about their character. I got so sick of their plastic, enigmatic smiles.
Oh Eun Young’s Report: Marriage Hell ( Episode 11
Jang-mi tells her dad to go to the hospital but he says that he won’t, since if her mom didn’t tell him she was sick it must mean she really hates him. He thinks his presence will only make her upset and she’ll feel worse. In the present, business is bustling again at “Ju Jang-mi” thanks to Ki-tae’s mother’s kimchi, and Jang-mi, Hyun-hee, and Yeo-reum are on top of the world. A perfect man, Kong Ki-Tae (Yeon Woo-Jin), is forced to marry by his family, but he doesn’t to marry. To make his family give up, he introduces a woman, Joo Jang-Mi (Han Groo), to them that they would never accept.
There were obvious missteps with supporting characters who were given central importance when we needed conflict, made to do crazy things to extend that conflict, and then shunted aside when they weren’t needed anymore. And as with most dramas that take on the contract dating/marriage premise, getting your characters out of the entanglement (or prolonging it, for that matter) proves to be a difficult endeavor. I loved the setup, but it started to drive me nuts the way we felt trapped there. The series was at its best early on, when the humor crackled and the couple was forced to act loving on the surface while antagonism brewed underneath.

His wife and mother I didn’t much care for. Se-ah and Yeo-rum I cared for even less except for during the beach escapade. I thought at that point they might have an interesting friendship between all of them but after that unfortunately things went back to square one. It might be the writing, the acting or a combination of both but they have not added anything aside from being plot devices.

Appreciate your comments and insights LOllypip and GF. I am still battling the tears as this show has come to an end and also the family relationships it has explored and unraveled. Love the stormy sky backdrop with the whole wedding tableau. Plus I’ve spent basically the whole drama admiring Han Groo’s fantastic legs. Will never forget this nor will I forget the hugs and laughs we shared while watching.
Comgratulations to Yeon Woo Jin and Han Groo! It’s my first time seeing Han Groo act and I’m even surprised because she’s so young! Her acting is on point and she’s so good at comedy.
I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is that makes MND memorable for me. I think it has something to do with how honest and realistic the story is and how relatable the characters are and the situations that they go through. Of course, it is largely due to how good the main leads are in portraying their roles. I loved this show so much, love all the relationships, friendships, mother-son, mother-daughter, mother in law-daugther in law… Anyway, sad to see it come to an end.

I was just checking viki and it appeared, I read the description and watched episode 1. I really loved the OTP, but the scene that by far made me grin the most was the one where the 3 women collectively kicked dad to the curb. But I am beginning to love Korean culture and actors. Thank you as well to all who do the subs.
This really was an interesting, unique, heartwarming, FUNNY show and I’m going to miss it so much. And because I didn’t get to comment on it in the last recap, I still love, love, LOVE the moment between Kitae and his mother on the phone and the ones here between KiTae’s mom, aunt and halmoni. I love how much this show emphasised the importance of family.
